2018 Winter Newsletter President’s Podium

Greetings to you all!  I can’t believe that Fall is already upon us!  It feels like we were just at the Annual meeting inducting the 2017-18 Board members amidst an Oklahoma springtime thunder storm, and now we are anticipating cooler nights and turning leaves amidst Oklahoma football.  I love this time of year!

As you know, OSHP is a volunteer organization that exists because of each of you.  Our organization represents a community of pharmacy-minded individuals that serve one another, our profession, and the community.  We all want to see our organization continue to thrive, just as it has since its official incorporation.  I want to briefly take you behind the scenes of our organization and provide an update on what the Board and Committee members have been working on.

This year we have started the process to take advantage of the consultative services offered by our parent organization, ASHP, which will consist of a legal review of our governing documents at no cost to our organization.  Following this consultation, we will begin the process of seeking re-affiliation with ASHP for consideration by the Commission on Affiliate Relations in 2018 – a process that occurs every 5 years.

As you can imagine, ‘business as usual’ has evolved over the years and OSHP has not been exempt from the changes in technology, inflation, or the rising costs of goods and services.  This year we had to upgrade our financial software and banking system, and obtain remote conferencing services.  The Social Media and Communications Committee has been working on reorganizing and updating the OSHP website ( and keeping up with OSHP social media outlets (Facebook and Twitter).  A fun fact…did you know that despite our rising costs, OSHP has not seen an increase in membership dues in over 11 years?!  The Finance Committee is exploring investment strategies to offset the increase in the organization’s operational expenses, but we want the membership to be aware that a small increase in membership will be unavoidable in the near future.

I am so excited about the continued educational outreach efforts OSHP is able to offer thanks to our volunteers and supporters.  Most recently, our Programming Committee was hard at work planning the Fall Meeting.  It was held Friday, October 27th in Tulsa at the brand new, state-of-the-art Tandy building on the Oklahoma State University Center for Health Sciences campus.   The CE line-up was excellent for both pharmacists and technicians.  It was an excellent conference!  Save the date of Friday, April 13, 2018 for the Annual Meeting in Oklahoma City.

As you may recall, we had our first Oklahoma Residency Research Conference in May this year, and received very supportive feedback.  I am pleased to announce that we plan to make the Oklahoma Residency Research Conference an annual event as well.  We hope you will attend the 2018 Residency Research Conference in Tulsa on Monday, May 21st.  While the Annual and Fall Meetings will continue to offer ACPE-accredited CE credits for both pharmacists and technicians, we will only be seeking Oklahoma State Board of Pharmacy CE credit for the Residency Research Conference to keep the cost of the conference to a minimum.  Our Programming Committee will continue to lead the planning efforts for the Annual and Fall meetings, and the Residency Research Meeting will be organized by its own planning committee.  Now that we have three larger meetings to offer the membership each year, the Board felt like we should establish a standing rotation schedule for hosting the meetings in the Eastern and Western Districts.  The rotation schedule we established is as follows: Fall 2017 (Eastern District), Annual 2018 (Western District), Residency Research 2018 (Eastern District), Fall 2018 (Western District), Annual 2019 (Eastern District), Residency Research 2019 (Western District), and so on.  We are working toward a precedent of setting dates and venues at least a year in advance to maximize the notice received by the membership and to streamline efforts by the planning committees.  Each meeting requires many volunteers to plan and pull everything together.  Volunteers are always needed, and planning for the Annual meeting is already beginning!  We would love to have your assistance, even if you have very little time to share.

In addition to the three large CE meetings held each year, we are continuing to offer Eastern and Western District meetings most months of the year.  While these do not always provide CE credit, they do provide networking and socializing opportunities for our members while still providing very valuable and pertinent clinical information.  We are continuing to search for resources to support state board CE offerings at Western and Eastern District meetings.

Our Membership Committee will soon be leading efforts for our annual membership drive, and the Nominations Committee will be seeking out candidates for delegates and officers in the near future.

Again, we would not be OSHP without all our volunteers.  I know that life is busy and completed tasks and efforts are often felt to be thankless.  Let me take this time, on behalf of the Board, to acknowledge and thank everyone who has signed up for one of the committees this year.  Your time and expertise are so very appreciated!
