SWOSU Fall 2017 sOSHP Report

Faculty Advisors: Tiffany Kessler and Nancy Williams

Reflecting back on Spring 2017

The Southwestern Oklahoma State University’s OSHP student chapter had a great Spring semester full of fun and educational activities. We hosted our annual Residency Panel, had two guest speakers, including one who presented over the importance of legislation, and held a successful fundraiser.

At our first speaker meeting, held on February 15th, Dr. Margaret Ramos, a pharmacist at AllianceHealth in Clinton, Oklahoma, explained a day in the life of a hospital pharmacist. She greatly emphasized disproving the typical hospital stereotype and explained all the possibilities in hospital pharmacy. For our second speaker meeting, held on February 27th, we had a total of 20 students gather to listen to Dr. Tom Davis talk about legislation as part of our professional development project. Dr. Davis discussed the importance of legislation and how it affects the students, as future pharmacists, as well as the current legislation issues and how they may impact the future of pharmacy. Students also wrote letters to their legislators as a grassroots movement to promote pharmacists receiving prescriber status. As a thank-you to those participating, we raffled off a prize.

This semester we experimented with a new fundraising idea. At the beginning of March, we took pre-orders for a box of Hurts Donuts. The box of Hurts Donuts included a variety of the top donuts that they sell. Cindy Phan, one of our fundraising co-chairs, picked up the donuts from Oklahoma City and delivered them to campus where they were then distributed. It was a unique and successful fundraiser that we may look into doing again in the future.

In April, we teamed up with our university’s Rho Chi Honor Society chapter for a few events. The first event was a book drive to collect children’s books to donate to local schools around our area. We also co-hosted a Quiz Bowl. Students created teams, which consisted of both students and faculty members. There was some friendly competition within the College of Pharmacy, and it was a great end to the school year.

In April, we also hosted a Residency Panel. We had many speakers including: Victoria Felder and Robert Holliday from Norman Regional Health System, Katherine Lutek and Stephanie Giancola from the Oklahoma City VA Medical Center, Jamie Wroge from the Chickasaw Nation Medical Center, and Kristi Rice from the SWOSU-Walgreens Community Pharmacy Residency program. All of these speakers are current residents and described to us the benefits of completing a residency, tips for applying to and interviewing with a residency program, and why they chose to pursue one themselves.

Looking forward into Fall 2017

This fall, we already have some great ideas to put into play. For our fall fundraising idea, we are going to deliver phone books throughout the Weatherford area. Dr. Mark Gales will speak in September to provide students with more information about participating in the local ASHP Clinical Skills Competition, and we will host this annual event in October. Along with these activities, we intend on having one or two guest speakers discuss their practice sites.
