2008 Annual Report


Office of President

It has been a productive year within OSHP thanks to the collective effort of many of our actively involved members. The Board of Directors and committee chairs met in June for a retreat to establish goals for the year. The Board of Directors set three overall goals for the society. I am proud to say we made good progress toward reaching these goals.

Our first goal was to enhance the collaborative medication therapy management (CMTM) language in the Oklahoma Pharmacy Practice Act. Many steps have been taken toward reaching this goal with the joint committee formed between OSHP and OPhA. With this committee's continued momentum, we hope to accomplish this goal within the next year. Our Annual Meeting program is offering CE on CMTM to better inform our members about this important issue and the activity of this committee.

The second goal was to improve the value of membership in OSHP by creating resources to foster professional development in health-system pharmacy. This has been a topic of discussion at many board meetings this year. We have solicited feedback from our members through a general survey in Spring 2007 and a website survey in Winter 2008. Both the Fall and Annual meeting have spotlighted Oklahoma pharmacists discussing practice issues at their Oklahoma health-systems. Additionally, the quarterly newsletter has been supplemented with monthly email updates. These email updates kept members informed of OSHP, ASHP, and pharmacy practice-related issues. In response to the website survey, an information sharing blog was added to I hope all our members will visit the blog regularly to make this a useful tool for information sharing.

Our third goal was to increase membership to 400. We had a successful membership promotion in the fall that brought in many new members to OSHP. Unfortunately, due to a decrease in renewing members, we have not yet reached the goal of 400 members. However, we are close and I am sure we will reach our goal by the end of 2008.

In addition to these 3 goals, each committee set individual goals for the year. Please read all the committee reports, as well as the board member and student society reports, to see the great accomplishments that happened within OSHP this past year.

I want to thank you all for the support given to me as your OSHP President. I really enjoyed to getting to serve you this past year. I know that the society will continue to grow and reach even more goals under the leadership of our incoming president Lesley Maloney. Office of President-Elect

It has been an honor to serve as the 2007-08 OSHP President-Elect. Through my first experience on the OSHP Board of Directors, I have met outstanding and committed OSHP members, learned a great deal about the inner workings of the Society, and gained a better understanding of some of the key issues facing a volunteer leadership organization like OSHP.

President Susan Fugate and I were privileged to attend the ASHP Presidential Officer's Retreat in Atlanta, GA. We garnered many new ideas for improving the vale of OSHP to our members, new concepts for CE funding, and new relationships with our colleagues in other states.

One of my duties as President-Elect was serving as the Board Liaison for the Legislative Committee. President Fugate challenged the committee with obtaining Collaborative Drug Therapy Management (CDTM) in our Oklahoma Practice Act. Oklahoma is one of the few remaining states that has no specific language on CDTM or agreements between physicians and pharmacists. OSHP is currently partnering with OPhA to introduce such language, now termed Collaborative Medication Therapy Management (CMTM), to the Oklahoma Board of Pharmacy, other providers groups and associations, and consumer groups. I plan to continue this focus during my year as President.

I am energized about my upcoming year as President, although it will be hard to measure up to current President Fugate and the immense amount of time and energy she has poured into OSHP over the past year. President Fugate and the BOD set several far-reaching goals for the Society this past year. In addition to the continued pursuit of CMTM, I will also maintain several other key goals outlined by the 2007-08 BOD including increasing membership numbers and developing more practice resources for OSHP members. The BOD will once again begin its year with a strategic planning retreat, and I hope we will further refine our goals for 2008-09.

A struggle facing many pharmacy departments and many organizations is the lack of a leadership pipeline. I hope OSHP members will see 2008-09 as their year to get involved, further develop their leadership skills, and make a difference in the practice of health-system pharmacy across Oklahoma. Only through the commitment of our members and their vision for our future will OSHP truly impact the lives of patients across our state.

Office of Immediate-Past President

It is amazing to me just how time really flew over the past 3 years. My tenure with the OSHP Board of Directors is now over. I must take the time to thank the members of the board over past 3 years for the hard work they have done and the accomplishments that have taken place.

I also have enjoyed immensely the friendships I have made not only on the board, but at the district meetings. OSHP is made of hard working health care providers and those of you attending monthly meetings are an inspiration to young and future pharmacists.

I do want to express my sincere appreciation for the current board members. It is not an easy task to run an organization like OSHP and I respect those that volunteer to do this work. It is often a thankless job, so I do want to take the time to thank the current board members. For the district members reading this annual report, please take time to thank a board member for the time and effort they take to make this organization a successful one.

Thank you to all that have supported me in OSHP and good luck to all of you that work in this great profession. Good-bye for now, and always good-luck!

Office of Secretary

There were 9 board meetings held during the 2006-2007 term. Board meetings have been held at the University of Oklahoma College of Pharmacy where videoconferencing technology allows our board members to attend the meetings on either the Oklahoma City or Tulsa campus. One board meeting was held in Tulsa, in conjunction with the Eastern District monthly meeting.

Database reports have documented the following trends in the Society membership:

The membership database remains updated throughout the year with updated reports regularly being provided to the board. We are pleased to report that greater than 92% of our membership has provided the society with their e-mail address. We encourage all members to provide us with a current e-mail address. Another great online source for society information is the OSHP webpage.

Special thanks to the members of the board and to our Staff Secretary, Amy Williams, for assisting me in my duties through a difficult year. Without their help I don't know what I'd have done. As my term closes, I wish the new and returning members of the board the greatest success and am confident they will continue to do an outstanding job of leading our organization.

Office of Treasurer

Since assuming the office of Treasurer last April, I have been on the steep portion of the learning curve. The organization's previous Treasurer, Wiley “Butch" Williams, has been very instrumental in assuring a smooth transition, and I am indebted to him for his assistance! I am happy to report to the membership that we have “weathered the storm" of our financial difficulties in recent years. As a brief reminder, the primary sources of income for our voluntary non-profit organization are pharmaceutical industry support, meeting registration and membership dues. While the pharmaceutical industry support has proven more difficult to obtain, I would like to acknowledge the hard work of this year's Program Committee and President Susan Fugate as they have been able to procure $4037.50 for the 2007 Fall Meeting and $17,190.95 for the 2008 Annual Meeting. Certainly, provision of quality continuing education programs is associated with expenditures, but the Society's 2007-08 Program Committee has more than done their part to help offset these costs. The OSHP Bylaws stipulate that since approximately two-thirds of our revenue is provided through the statewide meetings, the goal net revenue for the Fall Meeting and Annual Meeting is $2000 and $10,000, respectively. The net revenue for the 2007 Fall Meeting was $1466.61, and I am very hopeful that we will successfully achieve the Annual Meeting revenue goal. Regarding the other income sources, meeting registration and membership dues, the OSHP Board opted not to impart any increases during the past year. Based on a successful recruitment campaign by the Membership Committee, there was an upswing in collected membership dues for the 2008 cycle.

During 2007, the Society underwent a change in personnel for the Staff Secretary position. Patti Massucci-Cassidy tendered her resignation this past summer. Although her presence has been missed, the OSHP Board was able to take swift action and contracted the services of Amy Williams to provide secretarial services for OSHP. Amy has adjusted very well to her new duties and responsibilities with OSHP, and we are very happy that she has joined us!

For fiscal year 2007 (January through December), the total current assets are as follows:

In summary, the net worth of the Society appears to be on the rebound, but should be interpreted with some caution since the continuation of this success is largely dependent on the variability of the pharmaceutical industry.

The OSHP Western District held 4 meetings in 2007 with Oklahoma State Board of Pharmacy approval of 4 hours of Continuing Education for members who attended these meetings. Program Committee

The Program Committee is proud to report on a very productive year, and the committee co-chairs would like to extend a big Thank You to our fabulous committee for their hard work & endurance in planning both the 2007 Fall Meeting & the 2008 Annual Meeting. Between these two meetings, the committee has developed 13 hours of continuing education (CE) programming for the OSHP membership. American Council of Pharmaceutical Education (ACPE) accreditation was provided in cooperation with the University of Oklahoma College of Pharmacy, Office of Continuing Pharmaceutical Education for both meetings.

In addition to our committee's charge to arrange the programs, select meeting sites, solicit papers and prepare suitable subjects for discussion at regular meetings of the OSHP, our committee outlined the following objectives for the year:

1. Diversify programming to target technicians, students, residents, and hospital administrators.
2. Deliver program content using varied & interactive presentation methods.
3. Incorporate national pharmacy objectives into programs, including continued emphasis on the ASHP 2015 Initiatives.
4. Include a greater number of national pharmacy thought-leaders as speakers.

As you can see, our committee successfully met each of these objectives within each meeting's programming. In addition, we successfully incorporated the new ACPE accreditation standards and technician CE credit into our meetings. Finally, this Program Committee submitted a total of 14 industry educational grant requests to pharmaceutical companies in support of the meetings, and we are happy to report that 8 of these grant requests were funded.

2007 Fall Meeting Summary

The 2007 OSHP Fall Meeting was held Friday, September 28, 2007, at the Doubletree Hotel at Warren Place in Tulsa, Oklahoma. Meeting support was obtained from sponsors including Morris-Dickson, Purdue, Sanofi-Aventis, and Schering-Plough. Seventy-two members attended the meeting, and 43 statements of CE credit for pharmacists were issued.

A Residency Showcase followed the meeting, highlighting 7 programs from across Oklahoma, including pharmacy practice residency programs at Integris, Norman, St. Francis, and VA hospitals, OU College of Pharmacy at OU Medical Center and Hillcrest hospitals, IHS programs across Oklahoma, as well as the USA Drug community pharmacy residency program and the OU College of Pharmacy specialty residency programs.

2008 Annual Meeting Summary

The 2008 OSHP Annual Meeting was held Friday, April 18, 2008, at Integris Baptist Medical Center in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. Meeting support was obtained from sponsors including Integris, OU Medical Center, Amgen, Sanofi-Aventis, Ortho-McNeil, Forest, Wyeth, and Bayer.

A Pre-Meeting Symposium preceded this year's Annual Meeting on Thursday evening, April 17, 2008 at Cafe Nova, Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. One hour of continuing education credit has been submitted to the Oklahoma State Board of Pharmacy for this dinner program topic "Erythropoiesis-Stimulating Agents (ESAs) New Class Label", presented by Keith Hech, PharmD, University of Southern Nevada College of Pharmacy. The Pre-Meeting Symposium was fully sponsored by Amgen.

A Vendor Showcase was held from 5 - 6:45 p.m. following the meeting, featuring 21 vendors.

Finance Committee

The Finance Committee did not meet since the change in the office of Treasurer. The Committee will be convened soon to constitute a budget for the Society in addition to reviewing the current support allocated to the student organizations of OU and SWOSU Colleges of Pharmacy. Additionally, the Committee will be reviewing a recently released redesign of the Internal Revenue Service's Form 990 for tax-exempt organizations to insure compliance by OSHP with these requirements.

Scholarship and Awards Committee

The committee sent application forms for the "Sylvia J. Martin outstanding Technician Award" to all technician and pharmacist members. Habib Arsala from Integris Baptist Medical Center in Oklahoma City was the 2008 award recipient and received a plaque at the Annual Meeting.

Notification that the application forms for the "Continuing Excellence Award" were available on the OSHP Website was sent to all members. For 2008, we had three (3) recipients of the award: Burl Beasley, Michele Splinter, and Nancy Williams.

Recipients of the "OSHP Senior Student Awards" were selected by committees at both the Colleges of Pharmacy at the University of Oklahoma and Southwestern Oklahoma State University. These awards will be presented at their respective awards ceremonies.

The "$500 OSHP Scholarships" were awarded to Mr. Kevin Dill from the University of Oklahoma and Ms. Jessica Bowen from Southwestern.

Newsletter Committee

The Newsletter Committee has continued to publish the newsletter quarterly. During the 2007-2008 year, three newsletters have been published, with the fourth one coming out in May. We have continued to send out the newsletter primarily via e-mail and also make it available on the website. Not only has this method of delivery been successful in reaching OSHP members, but it also reduces printing and mailing expenses. However, for those members without e-mail, the newsletter is still sent to them via regular mail.

We would like to thank the OSHP Board of Directors, members, pharmacy residents, and students who submitted information for publication and encourage this type of participation in the future. The Newsletter Committee has continued to incorporate pictures from meetings and events highlighting active members, so smile when you see us with a camera. You never know if you might be in our next issue. We have tried to provide informative and timely information, and the newsletter has continued to expand each year, with our last two issues being eleven pages. This is almost a 40% increase in size from 2006! We have continued with the popular baby pictures of OSHP members and highlighting various areas of health-system pharmacy practice. However, this past year we also added several new sections, including one that profiles our OSHP board members and a section that addresses issues pertinent to pharmacy students. Additionally, we have received more updates from the various OSHP committees.

In the coming year, we will be changing to a different newsletter computer software program, as we have outgrown our current program. We also hope to incorporate ASHP 2015 Initiatives into the content of more issues as well as bring back a section in the newsletter aimed at pharmacy technicians. Lastly, we would like to encourage more submissions from our members. The newsletter is a great tool to keep everyone informed of health-system pharmacy practice activities. The Newsletter Committee needs continued input and submissions from all Board and Committee members during the coming year to keep the publication both current and useful.

Nominations Committee

The Nominations Committee was responsible for solicitation of names for consideration in the election of one ASHP Delegate, and for the OSHP offices of President-Elect, Secretary, and Eastern District Chair. Ballots were tabulated and verified for all elected positions.

Legislative Committee

The Oklahoma State Board of Pharmacy has been active in pursuing changes to the State Board of Pharmacy Rules and Regulations. The biggest changes have been rules to make changes to the hearing process and the disciplinary measures available to the Board of Pharmacy. The State Board has also attempted to pass through legislation to clarify the rights and powers of the Board during disciplinary matters, but the Board has met some resistance, particularly from trial lawyers. We have been watching the process and hopefully the Board will gain the support necessary to pass the legislation this year. For an update on activities of the Board please check the website.

The Committee has also been tracking legislation sponsored by the Oklahoma Pharmacists Association. The major issue for OPhA has been securing better audit protection legislation for pharmacies in contracts with pharmacy benefit managers and to secure payment in a more timely manner. OPhA has met significant resistance from the big PBMs, who of course want to have complete audit control and delay payments for as long as possible. The committee has also been tracking legislation that would prohibit generic substitution for immune-suppressants. A major concern on this front is that once this type of legislation starts, then which pharmacy manufacturer will be next to limit generic substitution. This will only drive the costs of healthcare even higher.

The primary goal for the OSHP legislative committee this past year has been to develop policies and procedures for collaborative drug therapy management (CDTM) in Oklahoma. Oklahoma is one of only 7 states without formal CDTM legislation. Members of the OSHP legislative committee have joined forces with the OPhA Medication Therapy Management Committee to work on this important issue. The joint OSHP-OPhA committee has met multiple times throughout the year. We have reviewed CDTM language of several other states and discussed which language would be best for Oklahoma. We have drafted a proposed revision to the Oklahoma Pharmacy Practice Act to incorporate CDTM policies and procedures. The committee will finalize this proposed language later this month. The next steps for the joint OSHP-OPhA committee will be to take the proposed CDTM language to key physician organizations to the state and to the Oklahoma State Board of Pharmacy. With the continued efforts of this joint committee, we hope to accomplish this goal within the next year.

Membership Committee

OSHP membership in September of 2007 totaled 318 members. Membership as of March 20, 2008 has increased to 352 members! New members were welcomed in a section of the OSHP newsletter for 2007. We initiated a membership drive in the fall to encourage current members to recruit new members by offering a half price discount membership for both a new member and current renewing member. We also conducted ten on-site visitations to hospital pharmacies around the metro Oklahoma City area to stimulate membership.

Thanks are extended to the OSHP Board of Directors. The Committee urges members for the upcoming year to get involved in the active recruitment of members to OSHP.

SWOSU Student OSHP Chapter Activity Report 2007-2008 Academic Year

The SWOSU student OSHP chapter has had a very busy and successful school year. Over the course of the fall and spring semesters, we have had speakers from several different health-system pharmacy practices. In the fall semester, Dr. Ben Welch spoke to the group about psychiatric pharmacy, and Dr. Tracy Hagemann spoke to us about pediatric pharmacy. In February, Dr. Becca Baugher came to share with us her experience in nuclear pharmacy. Clinton Indian Health Services (IHS) joined us in March and presented great information on what IHS is all about and how to get involved in this area of practice. At our last meeting in April, Dr. Nancy Williams spoke with us about her experience with internal medicine and nutrition support pharmacy. She also gave us information on ASHP and the benefits of joining after graduation. All of our speakers provided us with valuable information, and we thank them for taking time to visit with us.

In the fall semester, Dr. Mark Gales gave a tutorial over the Clinical Skills Competition. We had a great turn out again this year for the local competition, with twelve teams competing in October. The winning team, Beverly Medcalf and Mattea McClain, represented SWOSU in the National Clinical Skills Competition at the ASHP Midyear Meeting in Las Vegas.

Last semester, members came together to adopt a marine, and we sent monthly letters and care packages to him. The chapter also worked with Trinity Hospice at Christmas and Valentine's Day to prepare angels and cards for their patients. In March, we went to a local elementary school for Poison Prevention Week. We spoke to a group of fourth and fifth graders about what a poison is, where it can be found, and what to do if an accident involving a poison occurs. At the end of the lesson, we had a review game for the kids. They really enjoyed the meeting and game, and our members had a great time speaking to them.

In our last meeting of the spring semester, we elected a new batch of officers to guide us through the next school year, and we look forward to seeing what the next year brings. Our current officers have worked hard this past year to organize meetings and activities, and we would like to thank them for all they have done!

University of Oklahoma College of Pharmacy 2007-2008 Academic Year

The student chapter held its Twelfth Annual Clinical Skills Competition in September 2007. We had 10 teams competing on our Tulsa campus and Oklahoma City campuses. The winning team, Michelle Lamb and Kristi Sharp, represented the College in the National Clinical Skills Competition at the ASHP Midyear Meeting Las Vegas. Ten additional students attended the Midyear meeting and manned the Student Showcase booth which described activities of the chapter this year. Lynnee' Spiker and Katherine O'Neal attended the Student Leadership Meeting. The meeting was a brainstorming session to help local chapters improve and brought back some great ideas. Katherine O'Neal and Jennifer Gass are serving on the ASHP Student Forum Communications (Technology and Publications) Advisory Group ASHP Student Society and Leadership Development Advisory Group, respectively. Students are also serving on OSHP committees.

Regular meetings are held throughout the year at the college and invited speakers have presented on a wide range of topics. At the first meeting of the year Mark Bateman, President, described the benefits of joining sOSHP, OSHP and ASHP. Over 173 members were recruited for the 2007-2008 year. Speakers this year included Michele Splinter, chapter co-advisor in Oklahoma City, who gave a primer on the Clinical Skills Competition. In October Ann Lloyd, co-advisor in Tulsa , spoke about clinical pharmacy in general and about her practice site at Hillcrest Medical Center. In addition, she spoke about her past roles in solid organ transplant and nephrology at The University of Kansas Medical Center and St. Luke's Hospital in Kansas City. Residents participated in a residency panel discussion to give current students information regarding availability and expectations of residencies during November. In February, Anthony Davis, described his role as an emergency department pharmacist at Integris Southwest Medical Center. Our last speaker of the year will be Andy Laegeler-ASHP Student, Chair of the ASHP Student Forum Communications Advisory Group, on how students can get involved in ASHP.
