2009 Annual Report


Office of President

It has been an industrious year within OSHP due to the dedication of many of our actively involved members and committees. The Board of Directors decided to maintain the previous year's strategic goals and continue working to achieve each individual goal.

The Board took an immense step toward achieving its three goals when it decided to host the first-ever OSHP practice workshop focusing on National Patient Safety Goal 3E Anticoagulation. The networking concept stemmed from an idea by one OSHP member that was brought to the Board, and from there, the Board of Directors decided to take action. The workshop was a free benefit for OSHP members, and several pharmacists and nurses became new members through a registration fee taking OSHP a few paces closer to meeting its 400 member goal. Over sixty attendees participated in the afternoon workshop and shared ideas, current barriers, and plans for the future regarding meeting Goal 3E. I was impressed with the passion and creativity of our members, and I know the health of Oklahoma patients is in great hands!

OSHP continues its partnership with OPhA to enhance the collaborative medication therapy management (CMTM) language in the Oklahoma Pharmacy Practice Act. The joint committee developed draft language and made its CMTM intentions clear to attendees at the Oklahoma Pharmacy Alliance. With this committee's continued momentum, we hope to accomplish this goal within the next year.

The second goal was to increase membership to 400. We had a successful membership promotion in the fall that offered a discount for renewing members. Although many new members joined OSHP, there was a decrease in renewing members, so we have not yet reached the goal of 400 members. Thank you to every new member and a special thank you to our renewing members and those who recruited!!!

In addition to these 3 goals, each committee set individual goals for the year. Please read all the committee reports, as well as the board member and student society reports, to see the great accomplishments that happened within OSHP this past year. The Fall, Annual, and District meetings continue to have superb programming content and provide members with a good networking forum. The quarterly newsletter was revamped and is a great method for members to stay current on OSHP activities.

I want to thank each of you for your support through the past year and for your patience with my "squishy" terminology! I thoroughly enjoyed serving as your President and am disappointed my relocation caused my term to end too soon. I know incoming President Greg Clack will be a benefit for the Society. Finally, I couldn't have done anything without the efforts and guidance of our great Board of Directors - a big THANK YOU to Susan, Yvette, Kari, Jennifer, Greg, and Nancy!! And a special thanks to Amy and Shirley for their behind-the-scenes work!

Office of President-Elect

It has been an honor to serve as the 2008-09 OSHP President-Elect. Through my first experience on the OSHP Board of Directors (BOD), I have met outstanding and committed OSHP members, learned a great deal about the inner workings of the Society, and gained a better understanding of some of the key issues facing a volunteer leadership organization like OSHP.

I was able to attend ASHP's Leadership Retreat in Dallas, Texas, in October of 2008. I was exposed to new ideas for membership retention in organizations as well as examining different organizations' structure, which vary from state to state. Providing value to our OSHP members is an important part of membership retention and recruitment. New Pharma guidelines have already begun to have an impact on our organization, and the ability to secure grant funding, I learned, is crucial to being able to continue to provide educational opportunities for our members.

During this last year, President Maloney focused OSHP's efforts on partnering with OPhA to introduce such language, now termed Collaborative Medication Therapy Management (CMTM), to the Oklahoma Board of Pharmacy, other provider groups and associations, and consumer groups. I plan to continue to support this process as needed during the coming year.

I am energized about my upcoming year as President, and look forward to a successful year for OSHP. It will be hard to measure up to current and recent officers and the experience that they bring to the table; however, I will attempt to serve to the best of my abilities during the coming year. I would like to thank all those on the current Board of Directors for their hard work and perseverance to keep OSHP running so smoothly. In addition to the continued pursuit of CMTM, I will also maintain several other key goals outlined by the 2008-09 BOD including increasing membership numbers and developing more practice resources for OSHP members. The BOD will once again begin its year with a strategic planning retreat, and I hope we will further refine our goals for 2009-10.

I hope to see more OSHP members get involved this coming year, further develop their leadership skills, and make a difference in the practice of health-system pharmacy across Oklahoma. Only through the commitment of our members and their vision for our future will OSHP truly impact the lives of patients across our state.

Office of Immediate-Past President

It has been another productive year within OSHP thanks to the collective efforts of our many great members. Lesley Maloney has provided enthusiastic leadership for OSHP over this past year. The Board of Directors and Committee chairs have put in countless voluntary hours to lead and advance our state society.

This coming year provides a unique opportunity for me. Lesley Maloney has moved out-of-state making it difficult for her to continue to serve on the Board of Directors. Therefore, I have been asked to remain on the Board of Directors for an additional year to serve in the Past President role. I am grateful to have another year to be involved on the Board and contribute to the Society. I am excited about the coming year under President Greg Clack.

Thank you for the opportunity to serve on the Board of Directors. I have really enjoyed the colleagues and friends that I have gained through OSHP. I look forward to the year ahead.

Office of Secretary

There were 10 board meetings held during the 2008-2009 term. Excluding the brief board meeting that was held during the Fall Meeting at the Oklahoma City Zoo, all board meetings have been held at the University of Oklahoma College of Pharmacy where videoconferencing technology allows our board members to attend the meetings on either the Oklahoma City or Tulsa campus. This greatly improves flexibility and reduces commute times for our board members.

In November 2008, Amy Williams resigned her position as OSHP staff secretary. We thank Amy for her dedicated service to OSHP, and she will be greatly missed. The membership database remains updated throughout the year with updated reports regularly being provided to the Board. E-mails and website postings continue to be the primary method of communication within the Society. We are pleased to report that greater than 94% of our membership has provided the Society with their e-mail address. We encourage all members to provide us with a current e-mail address since e-mail continues to be the most rapid means of keeping the membership updated on current issues and available programs. Another great online source for society information is the OSHP webpage ( The website continues to evolve into an indispensable tool for OSHP, thanks to Ben Welch.

Special thanks to the members of the Board and to our past staff secretary, Amy Williams, and our current staff secretary, Shirley Dunn, for assisting me in my duties this past year. It has been a pleasure serving with such dedicated people. I look forward to a productive year in the second half of my term as Secretary.

Office of Treasurer

Over the course of 2008, we have witnessed, and some may have experienced, some economic difficulties. Although seemingly easy to do, I have not submitted a bail-out request to the federal government on behalf of OSHP! All jesting aside, although our organization has had its share of financial hardships in past years, I am happy to report to the membership that we have been able to keep our boat afloat. As a non-profit entity, the primary sources of income for our organization are pharmaceutical industry support, meeting registration and membership dues. With more stringent regulations imparted to drug companies by the Pharmaceutical Research and Manufacturers of America (PhRMA), pharmaceutical industry support has proven more difficult to obtain. I would like to commend the Program Committee for their exceptional work at overcoming this barrier in the provision of quality continuing education programs for OSHP members and still successfully procuring educational grant funding. In addition to the statewide meetings, an inaugural workshop focusing on the National Patient Safety Goal 3E (Anticoagulation) was conducted for our members last August and sponsored by Sanofi-Aventis. According to the OSHP Bylaws, a targeted two-thirds of our revenue should be generated through the statewide meetings, with the goal net revenue for the Annual Meeting and Fall Meeting of $10,000 and $2,000, respectively.

For the second consecutive year, the Membership Committee conducted a successful membership renewal campaign. With approval granted by the Board, members renewing for 2009 were offered a 20% discounted "early-bird" fee. In 2008, $11,902.00 was deposited in the OSHP account as a result of membership dues.

Also for the second consecutive year, OSHP underwent a change in personnel for the Staff Secretary position. Amy Williams resigned from the society this past November. Although her presence has been missed, the OSHP Board has moved forward and contracted the services of Shirley Dunn to provide secretarial services for OSHP. Welcome to OSHP, Shirley!!!

For fiscal year 2007 (January through December), the total current assets are as follows:

As my term comes to a close, I would like to thank the OSHP membership for the opportunity to serve the society. I would also like to encourage each of you to stay involved as OSHP members and consider raising your personal bar level in pursuit of further involvement on the Board of Directors or through committee service. There is strength in numbers, and each one of you can make a difference!!

The OSHP Western District held four meetings in 2008 that have received Oklahoma State Board of Pharmacy approval for 1 hour continuing education credit each for members who attended these meetings. There are two Western District Meetings that have pending approval from the Oklahoma State Board of Pharmacy for continuing education. These two meetings will likely not be evaluated by the OK State Board of Pharmacy until April 2009. Additionally, there was one Western District Meeting that provided 1 hour ACPE accredited continuing education.

I would like to thank our industry sponsors who have made our meetings possible and have made my job fun! We have had great turn-outs for meetings this past year, and I want to thank our dedicated members for their continued attendance and support. Getting to know our members has been the best part of this job, by far. Serving on the OSHP Board of Directors with this office has been an excellent opportunity, and I have enjoyed getting involved in OSHP and pharmacy practice in Oklahoma this way. My two-year term in office went by so quickly, and I am thrilled to welcome our new Chair.

Program Committee

The Program Committee is proud to report on a very productive year, and the committee co-chairs would like to extend a big Thank You to our fabulous committee for their hard work & endurance in planning both the 2008 Fall Meeting & the 2009 Annual Meeting. Between these two meetings, the committee has developed 12 hours of continuing education (CE) programming for the OSHP membership. American Council of Pharmaceutical Education (ACPE) accreditation was provided in cooperation with the University of Oklahoma College of Pharmacy, Office of Continuing Professional Development for both meetings.

In addition to our committee's charge to arrange the programs, select meeting sites, solicit papers and prepare suitable subjects for discussion at regular meetings of the OSHP, our committee outlined the following objectives for the year:

1. Diversify programming to target technicians, students, residents, and hospital administrators by planning one trial break-out session at an upcoming event.
2. Diversify programming to include educational materials on age specific populations (e.g., pediatrics and geriatrics).
3. Deliver program content using varied & interactive presentation methods.
4. Incorporate the ASHP 2015 initiatives into programming.
5. Research the programming of other American Society of Health-System Pharmacists state affiliates to identify issues regarding planning and scheduling of activities (e.g., social activities, program topics, meeting organization) to promote participation of members at OSHP Fall/Annual meetings.
As you can see, our committee successfully met each of these objectives within each meeting's programming. Finally, this Program Committee submitted a total of 13 industry educational grant requests to pharmaceutical companies in support of the meetings, and we are happy to report that 7 of these grant requests were funded.

2008 Fall Meeting Summary

The 2008 OSHP Fall Meeting was held Friday, September 26, 2008, at the Rosser Conservation Education Center at the Oklahoma City Zoo. Meeting support was obtained from sponsors including American Society of Health-Systems Pharmacists, Bayer, Pfizer, and MedImmune. Eighty-two members attended the meeting, and 56 statements of CE credit for pharmacists were issued.

A Residency Showcase followed the meeting, highlighting 10 programs from across Oklahoma and Texas, including Claremore Indian Hospital, Choctaw Nation Health Care Center, Integris Health, Norman Regional Hospital, St. Francis Hospital, University of Oklahoma College of Pharmacy, USA Drug, VA Medical Center, Oklahoma City, VA North Texas Health Care System, and W. W. Hastings Indian Hospital.

2009 Annual Meeting Summary

Finance Committee

The Finance Committee did not meet since the change in the office of Treasurer. The Committee will be convened soon to constitute a budget for the Society in addition to reviewing the current support allocated to the student organizations of OU and SWOSU Colleges of Pharmacy. Additionally, the Committee will be reviewing a recently released redesign of the Internal Revenue Service's Form 990 for tax-exempt organizations to insure compliance by OSHP with these requirements.

Scholarship and Awards Committee

Application forms for the Continuing Excellence Award were sent to all pharmacist members. Dr. Beth Resman-Targoff met the criteria for this coveted award this year.

Recipients of the OSHP Senior Student Awards were selected by faculty committees at The University of Oklahoma and Southwestern Oklahoma State University. These awards will be presented at the awards ceremony of each respective college.

The OSHP scholarships consisting of $1000 each were presented this year to one student from each college at the annual meeting. The recipients of the scholarships are Renee Tobey from the University of Oklahoma and Asmini Mohanlal from Southwestern Oklahoma State University.

The committee sent application forms for the Sylvia J. Martin Outstanding Technician Award to all technician and pharmacist members. There were no applicants this year.

Newsletter Committee

The Newsletter Committee has continued to publish the newsletter quarterly. During the 2008-2009 year we have completed two newsletters with the third to be sent out in April. Newsletters are distributed primarily via e-mail but continue to be mailed to those members without e-mail access.

Thanks to Django Belote, our newsletter has a new look this year! Two of the goals of the committee were to streamline the newsletter using new software and encourage members to access the OSHP website for additional information. Django accomplished these goals using Microsoft Office Publisher software and highlighting web addresses to OSHP, ASHP and other websites providing more information related to the subject presented.

We have continued to showcase the accomplishments of various OSHP members including students and technicians. Student chapter reports provide insight into the activities of OU and SWOSU Colleges of Pharmacy. The Letter from the President in each edition fosters communication from our leadership regarding the direction of the organization. The report from OSHP delegates to the ASHP Summer Meeting updated members on policy proposals or changes made by ASHP Councils. The ASHP 2015 initiatives continue to be a focus. A report on the National Patient Safety Goal 3E Anticoagulation Workshop sponsored by OSHP was included in the August 2008 newsletter with additional information available at the OSHP website. A clinical pearl describing the use of IVIG in the treatment of Clostridium difficile infection was also included.

The remainder of the year we will continue to include the previously described information and will also highlight different segments of the membership such as technicians, Board members and others.

The Nominations Committee was responsible for solicitation of names for consideration in the election of two ASHP Delegates, OSHP offices of President-Elect, Treasurer, Western District Chair and two nominees for the Oklahoma State Board of Pharmacy. Legislative Committee

The primary goal for the OSHP legislative committee during the past two years has been to to develop policies and procedures for collaborative drug therapy management (CDTM) in Oklahoma. Oklahoma is one of only 7 states without formal CDTM legislation. Members of the OSHP legislative committee have joined forces with the OPhA Medication Therapy Management Committee to work on this important issue. The joint OSHP-OPhA committee will be taking the proposed CDTM language to key physician organizations to the state and to the Oklahoma State Board of Pharmacy. Ongoing goals for the OSHP Legislative Committee are below and will continue to be priority in the coming year.
1. Establish a collaborative practice agreement between pharmacists and physicians practicing in Oklahoma.

Membership Committee

As of February 23, 2009, we have 270 active members. Although our purpose was to increase membership, we experienced a decrease from this same time period a year ago. Our renewal letter was sent out in October offering discounted membership dues by 20% if received by November 15, 2008. The members were also given the opportunity to renew online using Paypal. The many benefits of OSHP were highlighted in the renewal letter including: educational meetings with continuing education credits, a career center on the OSHP website with job listings, as well as a way to network and share information with other members. The National Patient Safety Goal 3E Anticoagulation workshop was successful in adding some new members to our roster. New members continue to be welcomed in the OSHP newsletter.

Thanks are extended to the OSHP Board of Directors. The Committee urges members for the upcoming year to get involved in the active recruitment of members to OSHP.

SWOSU Student OSHP Chapter Activity Report 2007-2008 Academic Year

The Southwestern student chapter of OSHP has had a busy and productive year. We have participated in numerous volunteer activities and had many informative speakers come and talk to our group.

In the fall semester, we had Dr. Mark Gales start off by speaking to our group about the Clinical Skills Competition and the benefits of competing. In September, we had Dr. Janet Pelzel, from St. Anthony Hospital, speak about her experience in anticoagulation, drug information, and ICU pharmacy. In November, we had Dr. Michelle Liedke, an HIV clinical pharmacist from the OU Health Sciences Center, come and speak to our students about advancements in the HIV area of pharmacy.

This fall, we participated in the KAT 5-K walk for chronic kidney disease in Oklahoma City. The proceeds from this event went to educate people on kidney disease. We also baked cookies and delivered them to the pharmacy at the Weatherford Regional Hospital to show our appreciation for National Health-System Pharmacy Week. Southwestern put on a health fair in which our members set up a poison prevention booth. During this event, we educated people on the importance of recognizing a poison and how to deal with an actual encounter. In November, we organized a can food drive and donated all goods to the Agape Free Clinic in Weatherford.

We fundraised hard over the course of the semester in order to send our members to the ASHP Midyear Meeting in Orlando, Florida. We had a record ten students attend. The winners of the local Clinical Skills Competition, Josh Keller and Justin Griffith, represented our school in the national competition in Florida.

This spring, our group has been busy. For our first speaker meeting, Dr. Tiffany Kessler spoke to the students about her residency experiences. She is a Southwestern College of Pharmacy graduate and will be teaching at the school starting in the fall of 2009. At this meeting, she explained the details of what a residency is and her experience in a specialized residency program focused on Internal Medicine. We also helped out the Faith Hospice of Oklahoma in February. We made candy vases for a Faith Hospice charity and Valentine's Day cards for patients.

In March, Ryan Walker came to speak about Walgreen's new and innovative residency opportunities as well as the benefits of summer internships. For the National Poison Prevention Week, we visited the elementary school in Hydro, Oklahoma. We educated students from kindergarten to fifth grade on the dangers of poisons. In April, we had Dr. Jodi Graft speak about her residency experience and her current position at the Edmond Specialty Hospital. To end the semester, we elected a new group of officers for the fall of 2009 and kicked off the end of the school year with an outdoor barbecue.

We look forward to what the next semester will bring. We would also like to thank our current officers and faculty advisors for a job well done!

University of Oklahoma College of Pharmacy 2007-2008 Academic Year

The student chapter held its Thirteenth Annual Clinical Skills Competition in October 2008. The winning team, Julie Beller and Ashley Nebbia, represented the College in the National Clinical Skills Competition at the ASHP Midyear Clinical Meeting in Orlando, Florida. A number of other students attended the Midyear meeting and manned the Student Showcase booth which described the poison prevention outreach of the chapter this year. Members worked with the Oklahoma Poison Center to promote safety awareness and poison education at three health fairs during the Fall 2008 Semester.

Other service projects include assisting with Wish Night, a fundraiser held by the students of the OU College of Pharmacy benefiting the Make a Wish Foundation and participation in The Big Event to be held on March 28, 2009.

The student society submitted the application and met the criteria for recognition as an ASHP Recognized Student Society. With this award, the past and current presidents were given awards and one student was given a paid registration to the Clinical Midyear Meeting.

Regular meetings are held throughout the year at the college and invited speakers have presented on a wide range of topics. At the first meeting of the year, Renee Tobey, President, described the benefits of joining sOSHP, OSHP and ASHP. Over 81 members were recruited for the 2008-2009 year. Speakers this year included Michele Splinter, chapter co-advisor in Oklahoma City, who gave a primer on the Clinical Skills Competition. In October, Craig Trusley spoke on the Rutgers Pharmaceutical Industry Fellowship Program. He and Matt Brammer are current residents and two P-4 OU students have been accepted to be residents starting this summer. Residents participated in two residency panel discussions to give current students information regarding availability and expectations of residencies during November. Our December speaker was Lesley Roth Maloney, President of OSHP. During the spring semester, Tammy Spears informed students of her role as a pharmacist in a long-term acute care hospital and Sarah Martin, a clinical pharmacist at St. John Medical Center spoke about her PGY-1 residency at St. Francis in Tulsa.
