2012 Annual Report


Office of President

It has been my honor to serve as your 2011-2012 OSHP President. It has been a busy and exciting year! I’m very proud of the things that the Society has achieved. Some of these accomplishments are summarized below:

  • In the fall, we held two very successful membership mixers in both Oklahoma City and Tulsa and recruited several new pharmacists and students to join.
  • On November 19th, we participated in a community service project – St. Jude Give Thanks Walk, which was held in both Oklahoma City and Tulsa. Volunteers passed out water bottles and also walked in the 5K event. OSHP raised over $900 to support St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.
  • Since OSHP hasn’t had any new t-shirts in over 8 years, the Board decided to sponsor a friendly competition between the two student chapters to design our new t-shirt. The winning design was submitted by the SWOSU chapter. The first bulk order has already been placed, but future orders will occur soon. You can show your OSHP pride by purchasing our new t-shirts. Profits made from the sale of these shirts go to support student scholarships.
  • Recognizing a need to strengthen our services for new practitioners and students, OSHP started a new mentor program this year. I’m excited to report that 6 mentor-mentee matches were made. Thanks to all who volunteered! I anticipate this program will continue to grow and expand in the future.
  • OSHP has continued to build relationships with other pharmacy organizations. OSHP again partnered with OPhA and both colleges of pharmacy to host the second annual Pharmacy Health Fair during Legislative Day on February 21st. Over 50 legislators and their staff were screened at this successful event. Additionally, we invited members of OPhA and the OK chapter of ASCP to attend our Annual Meeting.
  • Our Program Committee provided two excellent programs for the Society. Much time and hard work go into creating the quality programming that we have had. A special thank you to the Program Committee Chairs, Matthew Bird and Debbie Poland, as well as their committee members. Additionally, our Vendor Showcase Chair, Lisa Mayer, recruited a record number of vendors at our Fall Meeting – 34!
  • In an effort to reach out to our directors of pharmacy throughout Oklahoma, we hosted a roundtable discussion for them during one of our breakout sessions at the Annual Meeting.
  • The OSHP Bylaws Committee has diligently worked over these past few months to revise the bylaws, policies, and guidelines. This has been a very long and meticulous process, and I sincerely thank Susan Conway for leading this effort. The proposed changes are submitted for membership approval at this Annual Meeting and will then go out later for a membership ballot vote.
  • Behind the scenes, we started a new policy whereby board members and committee chairs complete a yearly conflict of interest form. Additionally, to protect our Society and its officers, we purchased group liability officers insurance through ASHP. These are both “firsts” for us that the Board decided was necessary as our organization continues to grow.

I want to thank you all for your support during the past year. I thoroughly enjoyed serving as your OSHP President and getting to meet so many of you. My sincere thanks to this year’s Board of Directors (Chelsea Church, Peter Johnson, Ann Lloyd, Mark Mills, Edna Patatanian, and Teresa Truong), committee chairs and members, and our staff secretary, Shirley Dunn. I could not have done it without you all! I hope our members will continue to get involved with this wonderful organization and make a difference in the practice of health-system pharmacy across Oklahoma. I will remain on the Board for another year and look forward to the amazing things that are to come for OSHP. Thanks for the opportunity to serve!

Office of President-Elect

It has been my honor to serve as the 2011-2012 OSHP President-Elect. This year has been a year of learning for me. I have had the opportunity to work with not only the Board of Directors (BOD) but many of the outstanding members of this organization. Since OSHP is truly a volunteer organization, we would not be able to do all that we do without the dedication and support of those who serve on the BOD, as well as those who serve as committee chairs/co-chairs and committee members.

The BOD and committee chairs met in July 2011 for a strategic planning retreat to establish goals for the year. During this retreat, we defined six major areas of focus for OSHP for the year: expanding the OSHP website, enhancing social media use, partnering with other state pharmacy organizations, increasing involvement of directors of pharmacy, increasing student activities and advocacy, and improving new practitioner services. I would like to continue working to expand and improve our services in these areas. We will again plan to start our year with a strategic planning retreat this summer to further refine the goals and opportunities for 2012-2013.

At the national level, I had the opportunity to attend several events which allowed me to learn more about our organization and network with other state leaders. In November, I attended the ASHP State Affiliate Presidential Officer Retreat in Dallas. This small group setting allowed me to learn about successes and opportunities for expansion from other chapters. At the ASHP Midyear Clinical Meeting in New Orleans, I attended the State Affiliate Leaders Conference and accompanied President Williams to the President’s Dinner.

Oklahoma Pharmacy Legislative Day was February, 21, 2012. Once again this was a successful event and a wonderful opportunity to work with OPhA and both colleges of pharmacy. I hope to continue our involvement with this since it aligns nicely with our focus on partnering with other organizations in the state.

President Williams started two new programs this year that I hope to continue. The first is the mentoring program. I would like to see this program expand to those newly in leadership or management positions. The second program is the community service activity. We had a wonderful response from our membership and had a lot of fun supporting a great cause.

I am excited and energized about my upcoming year as President. I hope to see our membership grow in numbers and in involvement. I am confident that OSHP members will see 2012-2013 as their year to embrace our mission of Leading, Advocating, Educating, and Developing for Oklahoma Health-Systems Pharmacists. Office of Immediate-Past President

It has been a pleasure to serve on the Board of Directors for the last 3 years. During this time, OSHP has accomplished and been a part of many activities. The Strategic Planning Retreat during the summer of 2011 helped us develop a plan of action for the next 3 to 5 years. And I can proudly say that during that time, we made great strides and accomplished a significant amount of the goals set during the retreat. The OSHP tagline, LEAD, perfectly describes what the organization is all about. A main focus of my tenure on the Board was spent on the “A” (advocating). Last year, we joined forces with OPhA to host the Oklahoma Pharmacy Wellness Fair at the state capitol during Legislative Day. It was a success and we were fortunate enough to host a 2nd fair last month. The hours and services provided were extended and again, it was a huge success.

OSHP has also had an active voice in the promotion of AOkPharm. This has allowed us the opportunity to promote the practice of pharmacy in Oklahoma. There has been more open communication with other pharmacy organizations in the state and a true sense of comradery. Collaborative Medication Therapy Management is still a goal we have been actively pursuing through advocation and education.

I would like to express my thanks to the Board members who have served with me. Thanks for all who have volunteered with OSHP and served on committees. Thank you to our membership for the opportunity to serve you. It has truly been an honor.

I look forward to the future of OSHP and am committed to staying active in maintaining our momentum and increasing our service to the membership, our health-systems, and our profession.

Office of Secretary

OSHP held nine (9) Board Meetings and a Strategic Planning Retreat during 2011-2012 term. Board meetings were held at the University of Oklahoma, College of Pharmacy where video conferencing technology allowed members to attend the meetings on either the Oklahoma City or Tulsa Campus. This site and the technology allowed flexibility and reduced commute time for the Board members, committee chairs, and guests. The December 2011 Board meeting was held in Tulsa, Oklahoma and the Board members present attended the Eastern District meeting.

The membership database remains updated throughout the year and updated reports are regularly being provided to the Board and posted on the OSHP website. E-mails and website postings continue to be the primary method of communication within the Society. We are pleased to report that approximately 96% of our membership has provided the Society with their e-mail address. We encourage all members to provide us with a current e-mail address to facilitate communication and keep membership updated on current issues and available programs.

Another great online source for the Society is the OSHP webpage ( The website continues to evolve into an indispensable tool for OSHP, thanks to Ben Welch for keeping the website updated.

Special thanks to the members of the Board and to our staff secretary, Shirley Dunn, for assisting me in my duties this past two years. It has been a pleasure to work with such a dedicated and talented group of individuals. As my term comes to a close, I would like to thank the members of OSHP for allowing me this opportunity to serve as Secretary.

Office of Treasurer

Over the last year, I have been learning the “ropes” as the OSHP Treasurer. It definitely has been a learning curve. I am indebted to Dr. Emily Borders and the BOD for their patience, assistance, and guidance to me during this time of transition. I have learned our bookkeeping system, performed the necessary duties including paying bills, and provided reports to the Board of Directors (BOD) on a routine basis. I have also worked with Dr. Borders and our accountant FD, Thompson & Co., to perform our bi-annual audit of the Society’s financial statement for the years ending December 31, 2009 and December 31, 2010. All of these things have at times been challenging, but I have enjoyed this opportunity to serve the members as well OSHP.

Our organization continues to not only survive but has in many ways thrived during the continued financial difficulties that face non-profit organizations like OSHP. Traditionally, the primary revenue sources for OSHP have come from pharmaceutical industry support for our Annual and Fall meetings, the Annual/Fall meeting registration, and membership dues. According to the OSHP Bylaws, a targeted two-thirds of our revenue should be generated through our state-wide meetings. Educational grants from industry are extremely hard to come by these days. Our Programming Committee has continued to submit educational grants. I am happy to report that we received 1 educational grant for our Annual Meeting in 2011. In July 2011, the BOD requested that the Programming Committee identify sources for alternative funding for our state-wide meetings and continue to find ways to decrease costs while maintaining excellent programming. The Programming Committee led by Drs. Matthew Bird and Debbie Poland worked with our Vendor Showcase Chair, Dr. Lisa Mayer to identify funding sources for the 2011 Fall Meeting. I am happy to report that their efforts were extremely successful. We had a record number of vendors at our 2011 Fall Meeting, 34 to be exact. This was all in addition to the wonderful programming put together by the committee.

With the efforts from the 2010-2011 and 2011-2012 Programming Committee Chairs Drs. Miki Finnin, Bird, and Poland, the Programming Committee, and Vendor Showcase Chairs, OSHP has been able to meet the revenue goal with $8,000 from our 2011 Annual Meeting and $14,000 from our 2011 Fall Meeting. Through these efforts, OSHP has continued to be able to provide the charitable donations to both the OU and SWOSU student chapters and the ASHP Foundation. In 2011, the Eastern District members gathered ten times to take part in continuing education and networking meetings. The Oklahoma State Board of Pharmacy has approved six of these meetings for one hour each of continuing education credit while the other four meetings are pending approval.

Despite the fact that the Eastern District has historically been smaller than the Western District, we have had great participation this year. The total attendance of all ten meetings was 357 with an average attendance of 36 at each meeting compared to last year’s total attendance of 306 and average attendance of 31. Even as the number of pharmacist attendees has grown, the number of pharmacy students and pharmacy technicians attending the meetings has also increased. I am very proud of our growth!

Of course, I would be remised if I did not thank all of our industry sponsors. We would not be able to cover the breadth of topics and meeting venues without their continued, generous support.

This is the end of my term as Eastern District Chair. I would like to take this opportunity to thank all of the dedicated members of the Eastern District and the Board for their attendance, assistance, and most of all encouragement. It has been a very rewarding experience for me to direct the district meetings and serve on the OSHP Board of Directors. I hope to see each of you at upcoming meetings.

You need JavaScript enabled to view it if they have a potential topic/sponsor for a future Western District meeting. I am currently planning meetings for Fall 2012 and would appreciate any input. For Spring 2012, meetings have been secured for the month of February, March, May, and June. Please check emails for details on these upcoming meetings.

I would also like to ask all Western District members to indicate whether they need a Certificate of Attendance at the same time they RSVP for the WD meetings. If needed, I will email it to those individuals after the meeting. This will become the new method of obtaining a certificate. This will assist in minimizing paper wastage. Feel free to email me with questions and/or concerns regarding this new method.

Last, but not least, I want to thank our dedicated members for their continued attendance and support at the WD meetings. Since taking over as Western District Chair in May 2011, it has been a joy meeting and getting to know many of the members! I believe 2012 will continue to be a success, and I hope to meet even more of you in the district over the next twelve months.

Programming Committee

2011-2012 Program Committee Annual Report

The Program Committee is proud to report on a very productive year, and the committee chairs would like to extend a big THANK YOU to the committee volunteers, Mark Mills, and Ann Lloyd for their hard work and endurance in planning both the 2011 Fall Meeting and the 2012 Annual Meeting. Between these two meetings, the committee has developed 12 hours of continuing education (CE) programming for pharmacists and 3.5 hours of CE for technicians. For both meetings, American Council of Pharmaceutical Education (ACPE) accreditation was provided in cooperation with the University of Oklahoma College of Pharmacy, Office of Continuing Professional Development. OSHP was also blessed this year with educational support from the national organization, ASHP Advantage for the Annual 2012 meeting to present a topic of interest to our members.

Our Committee’s charge was to arrange the program, select meeting sites, solicit papers and prepare suitable subjects for discussion at regular meetings of the OSHP, arrange qualified and engaging speakers, and obtain funding to support meeting expenses.

2011 Fall Meeting Summary

The 2011 OSHP Fall Meeting was held Friday, October 28, 2011, at the Gordon K. Jimerson, MD Auditorium in the Education Center at Norman Regional Hospital. A vendor showcase was held during the morning break and during lunch featuring 34 vendors at 500 dollars a piece with a total of 17,000 dollars.

A Residency Showcase followed the meeting, highlighting programs from across Oklahoma including the Chickasaw Nation Division of Health, INTEGRIS Baptist Medical Center, Norman Regional Health System, Oklahoma City VA Medical Center, Saint Francis Hospital, Saint John Medical Center, The University of Oklahoma, USA Drug, and W.W. Hastings Indian Hospital.

Bylaws Committee

This year, the Board of Directors appointed the Bylaws Committee with the primary charge of reviewing and recommending updates to the OSHP bylaws, guidelines, and policies. The Bylaws Committee has met and proposed revised language to all 3 documents. The committee has sought input on the proposed updates from the OSHP Board of Directors and from ASHP. In addition, a draft version of the proposed updates have been highlighted for members present at recent Western and Eastern District meetings and have been available for detailed review on the OSHP website for the past couple months.

The bylaws revisions have been completed and are being presented at the 2012 OSHP Annual Meeting. Upon approval from the majority of members attending the Annual Meeting, the revised bylaws will be presented to the full OSHP membership for a vote for final approval. This vote is expected to occur in April or May 2012.

The revised guidelines and policies are currently under review at ASHP. Once ASHP has provided feedback on these documents, they will be reviewed by the committee, posted for comment by the society, and subsequently voted on by the Board of Directors.

Finance Committee

The duty of the Finance Committee is to prepare and report a proposed budget for the Society to the Board of Directors for final approval. The Finance Committee did not meet this year, but the finances of OSHP were a frequent topic at the board meetings.

Scholarship and Awards Committee

The Scholarship and Awards Committee in conjunction with the OSHP Board of Directors and student societies from Southwestern Oklahoma State University and the University of Oklahoma raised money for the student scholarships by auctioning theme baskets a the Fall Meeting. The baskets had themes of date night, football night, Halloween, movie night and organic teas. This event raised $330. Monies were also raised for the scholarship fund by selling T-shirts which were designed by the SWOSU student chapter.

The committee was charged to review the bylaws pertaining to scholarships and awards of the Society. Recommendations for changes were approved by the Board of Directors and will be voted on by the membership at the 2012 Annual Meeting.

The OSHP scholarships consisting of $1000 each will be presented this year to one student from each college at the annual meeting. The recipients of the scholarships are Christine Castro from the University of Oklahoma and Duy Nguyen from Southwestern Oklahoma State University.

Application forms for the Continuing Excellence Award were sent to all pharmacist members. Dr. Darin Smith met the criteria for this coveted award this year.

The committee sent application forms for the Sylvia J. Martin Outstanding Technician Award to all technician and pharmacist members. The recipient this year is Laurie Elaine Johnson of Norman Regional Health System.

Recipients of the OSHP Senior Student Awards were selected by faculty committees at The University of Oklahoma and Southwestern Oklahoma State University. These awards will be presented at the awards ceremony of each respective college.

Newsletter Committee

The Newsletter Committee continues to work to keep the membership abreast of information that is pertinent to OSHP and the practice of pharmacy. During the 2011-2012 year, we completed two newsletters.

The “Letter from the President” in each edition fosters communication from our leadership regarding the direction of the organization. We continue to highlight the current OSHP Board Member through our “Get to Know the Board Members” series. Student chapter reports provide insight into the activities of SWOSU and OU Colleges of Pharmacy. Reports from each of the District Chairs highlight prior activities and provide information on upcoming Eastern and Western District meetings.

This year, a report from OSHP’s elected delegates highlighted policies that were discussed at the ASHP Annual Meeting in Denver, CO (June 2011). Additionally, an update on legislative issues in the state, provided by the legislative committee, was included in the newsletter. Evidence-based clinical pearls reviewing belatacept for immunosuppression in renal transplantation and clobazam for the treatment of Lennox-Gastaut syndrome, provided by two local pharmacy residents, were included as well. Photos from the OSHP Annual and Fall meetings highlighted activities in which members participated. Finally, our Oklahoma pharmacy residents were welcomed in the Fall 2011 edition of the newsletter.

Nominations Committee

The Nominations Committee was responsible for solicitation of names for consideration in the election of one ASHP Delegate, OSHP offices of President-Elect and Secretary, and Eastern District Chairperson. Legislative Committee

We continue with the grass-roots efforts that have been brewing for the past two years, since the 2010 Collaborative Medication Therapy Management (CMTM) rules to the Oklahoma Pharmacy Act were withdrawn before consideration before the Legislature. The goal this year was to increase student involvement in professional advocacy and involve the membership in grassroots advocacy. Below is a recap of the plans from 2010-2013:

This year, efforts were made to increase OSHP membership awareness of the Oklahoma PharmPAC, a political action committee, that is dedicated to pharmacy-related and relevant legislative issues. While this PAC was initiated by OPhA, we encourage OSHP members to contribute – to paraphrase the saying, “If we don’t all hang together, we will hang separately.” Past-President Chelsea Church and I have been meeting with the OPhA Legislative committee chair and current OPhA President, Justin Wilson to explore how our two organizations can help advance pharmacy in Oklahoma for ALL practice areas. We have generated some good ideas and it is evident from the huge turn-out from both OPhA and OSHP members at the OSEEGIB hearings at the capitol that we CAN and SHOULD work together.

***Members should look for new information and opportunities for involvement in grassroots advocacy for ALL Oklahoma pharmacists in the coming months. Please get involved, we need you!!

Members of the Legislative Committee attended the Oklahoma Pharmacy Legislative Day on February 21, 2012, including the briefing, the health fair and the reception. Students from both SWOSU and OU were an integral part of the healthfair and as I walked around the room I was so proud to see so many of our future colleagues actively involved and so enthusiastic about their future as Oklahoma Pharmacists. We encourage OSHP members to participate in next year’s Legislative Day: it is not just for our colleagues in community/retail settings. As health-system pharmacists, we are integral to the profession of pharmacy and should be represented.

Membership Committee

This year, the Membership Committee incorporated a few new ideas to help recruit new members. To kick the year off, an inaugural “End of Summer” mixer was hosted at McNellie’s Pub and the Paseo District’s The Other Room, in the Eastern and Western Districts, respectively. With a healthy dose of competition interjected to determine which District could attract more new members at their event, the Eastern District proved superior on September 8, 2011!!

The annual membership drive kicked off in October allowing members the opportunity to take advantage of a 20% membership discount for early renewal during the month. Also, during October, National Pharmacy Week was commemorated by each Board member randomly drawing one lucky individual from each District to receive complimentary 2012 OSHP membership.

Although the Committee’s goal of 400 active members was not quite achieved during the year, we still were able to make some forward progress and increased our membership by 15%. To be sure, OSHP dues continue to be a “big bang for your buck”! Our annual dues continue to be some of the lowest of any ASHP state affiliate and provide you with opportunities for local networking and continuing education. The Committee expresses appreciation to those who continue to support the mission and vision of OSHP and continues to challenge each active member to recruit one new member this year. SWOSU Student OSHP Chapter Activity Report, 2011-2012 Academic Year

Our Southwestern OSHP Student Chapter had another busy and productive fall semester. We hosted several great speakers and organized the local Clinical Skills Competition.

Our speakers throughout the semester included Dr. Mark Gales, Dr. Krista Brooks, and Dr. Chelsea Church. Dr. Gales came to give our group information and helpful tips in preparation for the Clinical Skills Competition. Dr. Brooks spoke to us about the different components of a residency and her personal experiences as a resident. She also covered various activities that are part of the application process and mentioned residency opportunities in Oklahoma. Dr. Church brought our attention to the subject of pharmacy advocacy, specifically related to the proposed legislation in Oklahoma that would have mandated Health Choice members to convert to mail-order pharmacy. Students at the meeting were concerned over this issue, and many took the initiative of emailing and making phones calls to their legislators. We were proud to see our students take an interest in advocacy and be active.

As is customary in the fall, we set up and sponsored the local Clinical Skills Competition. Seven teams participated in this event in October and competed for the grand prize – a free trip to the ASHP Midyear Clinical Meeting in New Orleans. Congratulations to the winning team of Robert Gholson and Patrick Kelley who proudly represented SWOSU in the national competition.

Towards the end of the fall semester, we held a pizza party made possible by the OSHP board members for winning the t-shirt design contest. Our submission was designed by Rubin Varghese and Long Tran. To wrap up the fall semester, we held officer elections. Many new officers volunteered to serve the OSHP student chapter for the spring semester.

Our chapter has had a busy spring semester so far, and we still have several great events planned before finals. We started off with a membership drive in January, which was quite successful. More than 30 new students showed up and are very interested in joining our chapter this semester. For our February meeting, Dr. Edna Patatanian educated us about her work in geriatric pharmacy. She described her accomplishments after graduation from pharmacy school and shared with us her experience in primary care residency. She also gave a brief description of all the different residency programs available in Oklahoma and encouraged students to apply. Students were very interested and enthusiastic about these residency programs. In March, we will be welcoming Dr. Tracy Hagemann from OU College of Pharmacy. She will be speaking about residencies, her work in pediatrics, and pharmacy advocacy, including what students can do to help make our pharmacy voices heard. In April, we will be hosting a residency discussion

panel that will be open to all SWOSU College of Pharmacy students. For this meeting, we will hear from Dr. Krista Brooks, who recently completed a PGY-1 residency at the VA Medical Center in OKC, about the benefits of a residency and how it helped her prepare for a career in academia. The current residents from Norman Regional Health System will be coming with Dr. Nancy Williams to give us more in-depth details of the application process, CV and interview tips, as well as their personal experiences as residents.

We have many volunteer projects planned for the spring semester. At the beginning of February, our student chapter participated in a volunteer project with Faith Hospice of Oklahoma by helping to assemble Valentine’s Day treat bags for the patients under hospice care. As part of our ASHP professional development project, we have chosen to continue a project started last year, which involved patient safety and continuity of care. In April, we will be creating personal medication records for distribution to patients at our local pharmacies. As we hand out these cards, we will be explaining to patients the importance of knowing exactly what medications they are taking, so that when visiting a new physician or in case of an emergency, they can provide information about their drug regimen to healthcare providers.

As our big fundraiser for the spring semester, we sold t-shirts and baked goods in February. Thank you to the officers from the fall and spring, since they came up with some very neat and humorous t-shirt designs. We will wrap up the semester by hosting a pizza party and electing new officers for the fall 2012 semester at our final meeting.

All of us are looking forward to the exciting activities that next semester will bring. We are very proud of what we have already accomplished so far and will accomplish during the remaining part of the semester. We would like to thank all of our officers for their hard work during the past year that makes it all possible. Also, we would like to thank our faculty advisors for being so patient and supportive!

University of Oklahoma College of Pharmacy 2011


Our first meeting in August centered on informing students of opportunities of membership in sOSHP, OSHP and ASHP. Ninety members have joined sOSHP. In September, Dr. Ann Lloyd, the president-elect of the Oklahoma Society of Health-System Pharmacists (OSHP) and Co-Advisor for the student chapter of the Oklahoma Society of Health-System Pharmacists (sOSHP) in Tulsa, spoke about her involvement and the numerous opportunities with OSHP.

In October, Shannon Holcombe from the Oklahoma Poison Control gave a brief presentation about the educational services they provided for poison prevention for seniors and local elementary schools.

In November, we held a residency panel consisting of PGY-2’s: Tommy Kleyn, Candace Hooper, Erin Lamers, Allison Baxley, Marquita Bradshaw, Lindsay Hogg; and PGY-1’s: Megan Andrews, and Stephanie Risland. The residents shared their experiences and suggestions in a Q&A format. There was also an evening panel where the P-4’s could ask relevant questions before applying for resident positions.

In February, Debra Weatherford, ARNP, CNS and Dr. Michele Splinter, Pharm.D., M.S., BCPS spoke of their experiences on a multidisciplinary team at the OU medical center and their previous experiences in health care systems.

In March, we will have a joint meeting with APhA-ASP. The speaker will be Tim Litsch from Prime Therapeutics, who will explain more about the organization and mail-order pharmacy.

Clinical Skills Competition:

In September, Dr. Michele Splinter, our co-advisor, gave a presentation about the Clinical Skills Competition. The competition was conducted in the beginning of October and nine teams participated. The winners of the competition were Lourdes Ramos and Loan Tran (P4s- Tulsa), who represented the college at the national competition held at the ASHP Clinical Midyear Meeting in New Orleans, Louisiana in December.

Fundraiser: We had a very successful fundraiser in the fall. We sold OU College of Pharmacy tumblers. Funds will be used to support travel expenses to state and national meetings.

Service projects: In October the organization participated in the Homeless Health Fair located at the City Rescue Mission of Oklahoma City. We held a Smoking Cessation Outreach and Information Booth. We received pamphlets from various non-profit organizations (i.e. American Lung Association and the American Cancer Society). Our goal was to educate patients on various life-style changes and pharmacological approaches to smoking cessation.

Also during the month of October, we teamed up the Oklahoma Poison Control at the OSU-OKC Family Child Care Conference and helped pass out information regarding poison prevention. We gave information about common household items that can be deemed harmful if not stored properly.

Our organization also partnered up with Marcus Garvey Leadership Academy in Oklahoma City to create a curriculum about poison prevention for the students in grades first through eighth. Five lesson plans have been finalized for the different age groups and will be presented to the students during the spring semester.

The chapter will be participating in the Big Event, a campus-wide community service project held on both Oklahoma City and Tulsa campuses.

The Tulsa campus is in the process of creating a poison prevention booth in the spring.

Recognition and Officers:

sOSHP has again gained recognition as an Officially Recognized Student Society of Health-System Pharmacy by ASHP. As such, one student received a free registration to the ASHP Midyear meeting. This was given to Long Nguyen, who attended the meeting and presented a poster explaining the Marcus Garvey project. In addition, Sheva Chopra will receive a leather portfolio as current president of an officially recognized chapter. Amulya Vanguri received the past president’s award.
